Before his debut he studied as assistant of KAMIMURA Kazuo. He made his manga debut in 1970 with “Kareta Heya”, published in the magazine Young Comic. 23186z
From 1976 to 1979, he created several hard-boiled comics with Moebius.
Among other prizes for his work, he won the Osamu Tezuka Culture Award (1998) for the trilogy Bocchan no Jidai, the Shogakukan prize for Harukana Machi-E.
In he was knighted a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2011.
He ed away on 11 February 2017 aged 69.
