You can tell I can relate to the main character. Though he sometimes comes off badly, he usually doesn't. A lot of people's lives have ruts or end up completely like his.

Basically this is the story of someone whose life prospects are looking slim. He's past the age where he might have found love, gotten a family, or become one of those dream prestige careers(or one childishly fulfilling). You're life may not be that one right now but I think its a feeling anyone that's gone through a rut can relate to.

Also while the protagonist isn't some wimpy small horny boy, I think that if you can relate to that type of social outcast, you can also relate to mr.kurosawa.

It does lose points because of the fights that don't mesh well with the initial style. And personally I didn't like the very end. Felt rather hollow, and we don't get to see what everyone feels or does afterwards.

Despite not always inspiring awe, did however consistently keep me interested and reading. The ending, built up by the last arc, really bumped this up from a solid 8 to a "great" 9.

This is one of the few manga I've read that truly touched my heart. It's irable how Fukumoto Nobuyuki skillfully portrays the trials and tribulations of a blue-collar worker thoroughly caught up in mid-life crisis. The weight of despair, loneliness, and numerous failures throughout life - all culminating to make a man feel wretched, pitiful and adrift was so well presented that I could almost feel Kurosawa'a sadness welling up within me.
Despite the sombre theme, there is silly humour aplenty - just like a testimony to the fact that life is comprised of both tears and laughter.

The conclusion may be off-putting for some, but I found it to be very fitting - making the characters and their predicaments seem all the more realistic and relateable. It also holds an important message for people who believe that riches and romance are the only sources of satisfaction that a human being can have.

As mentioned previously, the art is rather bizarre, and generally accepted as 'ugly'. While I will not deny the fact that it can hardly be called aesthetically pleasing, I feel that it matches the mood of the story perfectly - a solemn, realistic tale such as this would likely not benefit from having 'pretty' illustrations.

In conclusion - anyone with an interest in reading a touching and down-to-earth manga would do well to try Saikyou Densetsu Kurosawa; while fans of more action-oriented, romantic plot-lines should probably steer clear.

Edit : I've just discovered that this has a sequel. Frankly, I don't recommend it at all: not because the writing is bad, but because it pretty effectively destroys the ending of the main story, which, if my rating is any indication, I found to be excellent. My humble advice: If you liked the themes, mood and conclusion of this manga, don't even visit the series page of the sequel.

This one is a must read, and I mean you have to force yourself to read it. The beginning of the story was very hard to get into as the art and the main character completely turned me off from the story. However I picked it up again recently and forced myself through it. Definitely worth the effort.

great manga. its tough to get past the beggining chapters because the main characteers actions are annoying at times but once u get past the beggining the story is awesome and ends pretty nicely though a tradegy

A truely wise and well thought through series with moments that can have a strong impact on the reader. As it continues, it only improves, building its power with each volume. If this does not make you cry, it will at least move your heart. In the end, no one can be indifferent to the legend of the strongest man, Kurosawa.

Damn. I mean this is just a great story. If you an get past the art(or like me have grown somewhat accustomed to Fukumoto's art.) you will find yourself caught up in the awkward embarrassing misadventures of Kurosawa. It's hilarious, but as it continues becomes a bit more solemn. You'll laugh and cry as you read the Strongest Man's legend.

A truly touching (yes! touching!!!) tale of a 44 year old construction worker who's going out of his way just to make ends meet. As he takes you along with him on his adventures through life as a middle aged unmarried man in Japan he really makes you understand what it's like to be that average socially awkward guy. I have never felt more sorry for a person than towards Kurosawa as he shares his life stories. At the same time, I'd never thought I could laugh this much from a manga! I absolutely love this beautiful take on the cruelness of modern society and how hard it is to just get by. The loneliness and the pain of others belittling you and misunderstandings of good intentions made me cry and laugh at the same time. I dove into this story with little to no expectations and I have to say now that I'm in it, I just don't see a reason why I would want to get back out! Truly exquisite.
